The Background Music Matters- #14 (Un)Common Writing Strategies

by- Tom Kubrak

Duhhh… you might be saying to yourself right now. Of course the background music matters. But here I am, 3 years into writing, and finally taking action on this.

I started this out last week and already I’m seeing the results.

You may also be saying, “No Tom it doesn’t matter.” Well… maybe it doesn’t for you, but people wired like me(easily distracted and thoughts in a hundred different directions) I say it does.

REASON ONE – Changing the Song

It takes a burden off of your shoulders of worrying about when to change the next song. Thus, giving you a little more time.

How many times, if you were like me and listened to all of your favorite artists’ music while writing, did you find yourself stopping and going and searching for the right song? Or how many times did your mind go in a different direction when a certain musician sung something amazing and threw your train of thought in another direction.

Changing the song takes time and unfortunately, as a freelance writer early on in his career, it’s time that I finally realized I can’t afford to waste right now

REASON TWO- Getting in a Zone

When you have a playlist that is in the background that is just-right you can focus entirely on the project at hand. It blends into the background and it sparks a type of zone that maximizes your creative abilities.

REASON THREE – Not Having to Think About What Song to Play Next

When you find that playlist that works for you. You never have to worry about what type of music you’re going to play today or what playlist I should put on today because you have just a couple to choose from now instead of 100 different possibilities.

It becomes automatic and again you now have more time to do what you’re supposed to be doing. That is…

…Writing.

REASON FOUR- Songs with Lyrics

If you’re a writer you should love words… different uses of them, and learning new ones to add to your writing. I also love lyrics in songs and when I hear an artist use words in a rhythmic and epic way I just lose it. In a good way, but again, I’ve stopped writing…

This doesn’t mean I’m not going to listen to these amazing musicians. It just means that I’m going to listen to these songs at different times of the day now.

SPOTIFY PLAYLISTS THAT YOU COULD PLAY IN THE BACKGROUND WHILE YOU WRITE

  1. Deep Focus(My personal favorite)https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DWZeKCadgRdKQ
  2. Lo-Fi Beats
  3. White Noise
  4. Chill Lofi Study Beats
  5. Peaceful Piano
